The Joffrey Concert Group is the performance division of the world renowned Joffrey Ballet School. The Joffrey Concert Group, founded in 1981 by Robert Joffrey, performs work of co-founder Gerald Arpino and of its current Artistic Director Davis Robertson, as well as Brian McSween. The JCG is made up of the highest level of trainees at the school who range in age from 17 to 23, with a majority being post high school and pre-professional dancers. Brian McSween, Associate Artistic Director of the JCG, conducted the Master Class.

“Having the Joffrey Concert Group at SAA was such an incredible learning opportunity for our students. They were so inspired by Brian’s teaching and by the dancers’ performance. We are so grateful to the Savannah Dance Festival for providing invaluable exposure to this level of artistry, since many of our students are not able to travel to see companies like Joffrey,” comments Christine Shawl, Director of the Dance Department at SAA.

“In keeping with our mission of inspiring and educating young dance students, we were happy to introduce a group of this caliber to the SAA dance students. We are also grateful to the parents of SAA students who volunteered and opened their homes to the Joffrey dancers during their stay in Savannah,” states SDF President, Bobbie Shelton.

Thank you, Savannah, for meeting Leopold’s Challenge! Last fall, Stratton and Mary Leopold, proprietors of Leopold’s Ice Cream, challenged Savannah to donate $5000

to match their own donation with a deadline of December 31st. The Leopold’s believe the development of the Savannah Dance Festival will enhance the rich and diverse Arts and Cultural Landscape in Savannah. Mary describes dance as “the mind, body and soul in symmetry.”

Every afternoon for two weeks in October, volunteer dance instructors taught dance classes  to the students in the after school program at the West Broad Street YMCA. From the smiles on their faces, the students were truly engaged. Coordinated by Christina Powell, volunteer instructors were Heidi Carter, Nora Clark, Darrell Davis Travis Dodd and Muriel Miller. Students from Savannah Arts Academy volunteered as mentors.

Savannah Dance Festival is pleased to announce that Dominique Terrell of Savannah, Georgia, has been awarded the “Victor Alfredo Chavez” Scholarship. Hosted by Armstrong Atlantic State University, dancers over age 16 were invited to audition for a full scholarship to attend the American Dance Festival’s 2013 Six Week School.

Terrell is a senior dance major at Savannah Arts Academy. She was nominated for the 2012 Governor’s Honors Program, is a member of the Savannah Arts Academy (SAA) Dance Company and President of their Nu Delta Alpha Dance Honor Society (2012-2013). She specializes in Modern, Hip Hop, Ballet, Jazz and West African styles of dance. Christine Fehr, dance instructor at SAA notes, “Dominique is a wonderful example of how a dancer’s experience in many different dance forms with many different teachers culminate to form a new unique artistic direction. She is a role model for the diversity needed from dancers to be able to survive in today’s changing world of dance.”

Terrell was selected by Gerri Houlihan – Co-Dean of American Dance Festival (ADF) and Professor of Dance at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. Dancers from around the country and around the world will attend ADF to train and to create, to see, and to be seen. Through the “Victor Alfredo Chavez” Scholarship from SDF, Terrell will engage in collaborative creative processes with ADF’s diverse and outstanding faculty, extraordinary musicians, and vibrant student body. She will receive course training in Contemporary Technique, Composition, Improvisation, Repertory, Ballet, African Technique, Voice & Gesture, and Hip Hop.

Terrell is the daughter of Ms. Gail Terrell and Mr. Sandy Terrell.

GERRI HOULIHAN

Gerri Houlihan began her professional career at the Julliard School, studying with Anthony Tudor and members of Martha Graham and Jose Limon dance companies. She has performed with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, was a soloist with Lar Lubovitch and has choreographed for countless institutions including New York City High School of Performing Arts, Boston Ballet and North Carolina School of the Arts.

Ms. Houlihan was on the faculty of New World School of the Arts in Miami for eleven years.  She is currently co-dean of American Dance Festival and has participated in seventeen international linkages, sending her all over the world to teach classes. Ms Houlihan is a professor of dance at Florida State University in Tallahassee Florida.
